From planning your route to docking at one of Formentera’s famous beachside restaurants, here are all the essential tips and precautions you need to know for a smooth and unforgettable day on the water.
Before You Set Sail: Plan for a Perfect Day
A successful day at sea starts well before you reach the marina. Here’s how to plan ahead:
- Check the weather forecast for your chosen day (You can check the weather here: Windguru and Windy)
- Design your route based on sea and wind conditions
- If you’re planning to lunch at a restaurant in Formentera, make sure it’s accessible from your route
- Reserve your table in advance, and check if the restaurant offers tender service
- Some restaurants only take bookings for specific time slots—plan accordingly
- Prefer to be spontaneous? Our marina team is happy to help with last-minute recommendations and bookings
Arrival at Marina Ibiza
Once you arrive, head to the Motonáutica Ibiza office at Marina Ibiza ([Google Maps link]). Please bring:
- Your boating license
- A credit or debit card to cover the deposit and any remaining balance
Our staff will handle the paperwork, walk you through safety instructions, answer any questions, and help with restaurant bookings or route suggestions.
Boat Handover Checklist
Only the designated skipper should board the boat with our team for an uninterrupted briefing. Here’s what we’ll review together:
- Inspect the propeller for damage
- Confirm fuel level (return full)
- Learn how to use the engine kill switch and start the motor
- Test the steering system, navigation lights, and horn
- Make sure the ladder is properly stowed and easy to deploy
- Locate and review all safety equipment and documentation
- Confirm that the number of passengers + luggage does not exceed the limit
- Ensure all items on board are securely stowed
🚫 Shoes off, please! There will be a basket on the dock for everyone’s footwear before boarding.
Departure & Navigation Tips
Let the adventure begin!
- Our staff will assist you with casting off
- Once clear of the dock, you’ll take over
- Maintain a slow speed (max 6 knots) while exiting the marina
- Once outside, move away from traffic, shift to neutral, and remove and stow the fenders
- Check that all passengers are seated securely before accelerating
To get on plane, apply strong throttle and ease off gradually as the hull lifts. Always stay alert for other vessels and avoid rushing—smooth sailing makes for a better experience.

Anchoring Safely
When you’ve found the perfect cove to stop and relax:
- Always anchor over sandy seabeds to protect the Posidonia seagrass
- Leave enough space from other boats, considering your boat may swing with wind shifts
- Face into the wind and drift slightly forward of your intended position
- Drop the anchor, then slowly reverse while letting out chain
- Use the rule of thumb: 3x depth = length of chain (e.g., 15m chain for 5m depth)
- Once set, verify the anchor is secure and that you have clearance from nearby boats
Visiting a Beachside Restaurant
Once anchored near your chosen restaurant:
- Contact the restaurant via VHF radio (each has its own channel)
- Gather your belongings, change clothes (if needed), and call the tender
- Most locations are on sandy beaches, so shoes are optional
- Stay barefoot on the boat and tender for safety
- The tender will pull alongside your boat—assign someone to assist passengers boarding
- Follow all instructions from the boatman, especially when stepping aboard or disembarking
🍷🚫 Enjoy your meal—but remember, the skipper must remain alcohol-free, as boating under the influence is prohibited.
When it’s time to return, follow the boatman’s instructions again. And while not required, a tip is always appreciated and common practice.
Returning to Port
As your day winds down, here’s how to wrap up smoothly:
- Plan your return time: approx. 30 mins from Espalmador, 40 mins from Illetas, 1 hour from Cala Saona
- Stay aware of other vessels and obey right-of-way rules
- Reduce speed to 8 knots when approaching the marina
- Away from traffic, stop the boat and shift to neutral to re-deploy the fenders
- If refueling, head to the Marina Ibiza fuel dock, circling the control tower
- Let the staff know you need gasoline, and wait your turn respectfully
Our team will assist with docking and refueling—and even take the boat back to its berth so you can relax. Once docked:
- We’ll check the boat for any damages or missing equipment
- Don’t forget to collect your belongings and dispose of trash properly
